I spend multiple days a week commuting by train, and it’s fascinating to watch people interact with their phones in real time. On the surface, they’re simply passing the time, but if you look closely, many are tuned into podcasts or daily news updates. It makes me wonder: How do these folks perceive AI, and are they using it on a regular basis?

Because I lead an AI department, I constantly think about this technology. But in reality, I’m no different from the people I see on the train. Every morning, I listen to a few political podcasts and a few AI-related ones, believing both topics are closely intertwined. I’ll admit my viewpoint comes from a place of privilege: I work in AI every day. Still, recent statistics show a growing number of people are experimenting with AI in some capacity. With that in mind, I’d like to offer a few pointers on how you—no matter who you are—can develop your own personal AI strategy.

My guiding principle in building any product is to ask, “What ultimate value does this offer the end user?” Let’s apply the same logic to AI. What does AI mean to you as an individual?

Let’s imagine a scenario a couple of decades from now, where 75% of our daily tools include AI in some form. It seems inevitable that we’ll all need to understand and manage AI. We might become AI managers who oversee different “agents” building and creating, while we direct and refine their tasks. If that’s the future, here’s how you can start preparing right now: 1. Build AI Awareness & Mindset

Recognize that AI isn’t just for tech professionals—it has the power to transform every industry. Start by shifting your mindset: AI is already here and it’s influencing the way we work, communicate, and solve problems.

2. Identify AI’s Role in Your Industry

No matter what sector you’re in—marketing, finance, healthcare, logistics—research how AI is already revolutionizing it. Seek out AI-driven tools that can enhance your specific tasks or projects.

3. Develop Data Literacy & AI Fundamentals

Learn the basics of AI: machine learning, neural networks, and automation. Understand how AI uses data and how to interpret the insights it produces. Even a high-level awareness of these concepts will boost your comfort with AI technologies.

4. Gain Hands-On Experience with AI Tools

Experiment with AI-powered platforms like ChatGPT, MidJourney, or Claude AI. As you become more proficient with large language models, you can move toward automation and workflow integrations—areas that will likely be major game changers in the near future.

5. Enhance Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving Skills

While AI excels at processing data, humans are still unmatched in judgment, creativity, and ethical decision-making. Strengthen your ability to evaluate AI-driven outputs, acknowledging that AI systems can still “hallucinate” or produce questionable results.

6. Strengthen Soft Skills & Adaptability

Empathy, leadership, and communication are uniquely human strengths. Prioritize collaboration, emotional intelligence, and adaptability so you can work effectively alongside AI rather than feel threatened by it.

7. Stay Updated & Continuously Learn

AI is evolving rapidly. Keep up with the latest developments by subscribing to AI newsletters, attending webinars, and joining dedicated communities. Treat ongoing learning as an essential part of your career or personal growth.

8. Integrate AI into Your Career Strategy or Personal Life

Pinpoint areas where AI can streamline your job, business, or personal goals. Even if you’re a truck driver, look for ways AI might assist with route planning, logistics, or safety monitoring.

9. Future-Proof Your Career with AI Ethics & Innovation

Familiarize yourself with the ethical concerns surrounding AI—bias, regulation, data privacy. Set yourself apart by demonstrating both an understanding of AI tools and a commitment to responsible, forward-thinking implementation.

If you start incorporating these steps, you’ll be well on your way to developing your own personal AI strategy—one that helps you stay competitive, informed, and ready for a world increasingly powered by artificial intelligence. The train is moving fast; don’t miss your chance to jump aboard.
